Not to be confused with hardened which also has a hard surface but the characteristic temperature range of hardening could make the stem brittle and break under stress . Carburizing is a chemical hardening treatment characteristic of gears ,and does not alter the internal properties of the metal.

The MD racing skid has a 4.00 mm -0 +0.02 cents stem , so as to compensate for the enlargement of the hole on the piaggio fork and decrease the lateral clearance , improving the hold in position of the preselector .

Another important change from the original skid is the increase in the height of the plinth which from the original 4.90mm has been increased to 5.5mm for a greater gripping surface on the spreader and less wear over time.
