Shims are used to compensate for axial backlash between gears.
Gear spacing is essential for a clean shift. The closer backlash is chosen, the less the gears can slip sideways. The shift becomes more accurate because the shift paddle engages exactly in the center of the sprocket and does not push it away. It is therefore worthwhile to measure the gear precisely.
